The potential job impacts have been cited on this forum and elsewhere to convince some Canadians that following through on Kyoto would be a bad idea. Making Kyoto Work: A Transition Strategy for Canadian Energy Workers shows that, in fact, employment increases in Canada's energy sector under Kyoto. There are also tremendous job growth potential in renewable energy, energy efficiency, fuel-efficint vehicels, and transit.
The paper also shows that there will be a shift in the type of energy-related jobs in Canada, but that it would be relatively inexpensive to ensure transition programs for energy workers who do lose their jobs.
The paper can be accessed on the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives website at www.policyalternatives.ca.
