What is the antidote to climate pessimism?

Just the facts ma’am. Now that we, and in particular, industry leaders are no longer denying the reality of human induced climate change, new tactics are emerging—denying the urgency and slowing down the renewables. Here are some recent facts taken from Rick Smith, president of the Canadian Climate Institute.

The European Union is leading major progress in cutting emissions. The most recent data show that EU countries slashed emissions by over 8% in a single year in 2023, the largest drop in decades outside of the COVID-19 years. Its collective emissions are 37% lower than 1990 levels, all while the economy grew nearly 70% bigger. The EU remains on track to cut emissions 55% below where they were in 1990 by 2030.

In the United Kingdom, the country has already seen emissions fall by more than half since the same baseline year, while the country used its last pound of coal to power its grid. More than half the vehicles in China are expected to have a plug-in-this year. As well, clean power installations soared last year, as the country hit its 2030 renewable target six years ahead of schedule.

The elephant in the room we are all facing is whether or not the states in the US can fight off the Trump pathology against renewable policy.
