One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

Environmental advocates attending this year's COP22 in Marrakech, Morocco, issued a release Wednesday calling out Canada's competing policy priorities.

"It is a serious concern when we see the international community not honouring their commitments and we are concerned Canada is still pursuing their fossil fuel projects," Benson Ireri of Christian Aid Africa said in the release. "Developed countries have a moral obligation to honour the Paris Agreement."

The European Union hits energy reduction targets six years early. Several EU directives maligned by critics and industry groups played a key role in reaching the non-binding efficiency target of reducing final energy use 20% by 2020 compared with projected use that year, according to the report published by the EU’s Joint Research Centre. These included laws on energy efficiency, eco-design, buildings performance and fuel economy.
