According to the Clean Economy Fund, donations to climate-related causes ($106 million in 2022) represent less than 1% of Canadians’ charitable giving – and below the global average of 1.6%. The CEF’s goal of tripling annual donations got a boost last week with the announcement that a group of Canadian family foundations have pledged $405 million to fight global warming. As John Lorinc writes, each foundation will make its own investment decisions, although the CEF is considering pooling funds in future to create more impact. For now, says Eric St-Pierre of the Trottier Family Foundation, one of the top donors, “I would say this $405 million is first a pledge, it’s a commitment, and it’s basically a call to action.”

Let’s see if individual Canadians can help boost this donation, by replacing Christmas gifts with a donation to groups and organizations fighting climate change and biodiversity loss. Together, we can all make a difference.
