"Michael Bloomberg, a UN special envoy on climate change and former mayor of New York City, has funded a $164 million campaign in the US since 2010, during which time more than half the nation’s coal-fired power plants have been closed."
Last week, he announced a $50m plan to expand the program into Europe and to the rest of the world. Bloomberg participated in the global climate change summit in Bonn, Germany, where he led a group of states, cities and businesses pledging action in the US despite President Donald Trump’s opposition.
And companies from every EU nation except Poland and Greece have signed a pledge that no new coal-fired plants will be built in the EU after 2020.
And kudos to Minister McKenna for her leadership at the latest climate change talks on eliminating coal. Now, please build on the lessons we learned when we created the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy and create a Round Table of business, civil society leaders and researchers to build Canada's transition strategies for moving to critically meeting our GHG emission targets and moving to low carbon development paths, so that no one community is left behind.
